We are dedicated to engaging and empowering Queensland’s brilliant students in a collaborative, world class educational environment to realise their future potential. The Queensland Academies were created as an innovative educational program for highly capable high school students. The Science, Mathematics and Technology Campus at Toowong and the Creative Industries Campus at Kelvin Grove opened in January 2007 for Year 10 and Year 11 students. The following January the Health Sciences Campus opened at Southport on the Gold Coast.
The exciting benefits of attending the Queensland Academies include:
Studying with like-minded students
By challenging current approaches to teaching and learning, the Academies enable students to learn from and with each other. The Academies, and the International Baccalaureate curriculum, promote a sense of team in which students are not competing for a finite number of top scores.
Internationally recognised curriculum
The Queensland Academies offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program – an internationally recognised pre-university level qualification that allows subjects to be accelerated and graduating students to study at Australian tertiary institutions as well as overseas universities.
Preparation for university
The rigour of the IB curriculum with subjects such as an introduction to the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (a research topic of the student’s choosing), coupled with the style of education enables students to adjust more readily to university conditions.
Partnerships with universities
Partnerships with leading universities afford benefits including credit into second-year university courses, attainment of additional tertiary rankings, industry experience, involvement with university staff and access to world-class resources and facilities.
The new university-standard facilities at the Academies have full wireless connectivity which allows students to use laptop tablets, instead of traditional exercise books, for all subjects.
Stimulating, challenging environment
Highly capable students are stimulated with challenging extension and enhancement opportunities delivered in collaboration with partner universities and organisations. They take part in camps, formals, sports and music events and milestone activities such as formals and graduation ceremonies. They are challenged by an array of school-based extracurricular Creativity Action and Service (CAS) activities.
However challenging the curriculum, we believe students will find their place with us, surrounded by like-minded peers. They will be treated equally, regardless of their background or circumstances, and we will work tirelessly and provide the tools, support and safe environment required to empower our students to unlock their potential and meet their goals.
