Past Project: Innovation Thinking Teacher Professional Development, QASMT
2015 Smithsonian Fellow Dr Kathy Mackey has recently returned from Washington DC where she spent three months working with the Smithsonian Centre for Learning and Digital Access.
Based on her experience we are offering a free opportunity for teachers from our partnership schools to participate in a unique Innovation Inquiry Professional Development Workshop. Innovation Thinking is a broader cycle of inquiry that allows teachers and students to use and embrace STE/AM problem solving across a range of curriculum areas.
Innovation Thinking builds on the design cycle and explores economic and historical applications including the pre-conditions for invention, how we learn to recognise the unusual and to see new connections and possibilities. This process allows all learners to navigate challenge and embrace the rewards of intellectual risk taking. The workshop is targeted at middle years teachers, but teachers of lower year levels would also be welcome.
During the workshop teachers will:
- Be introduced to international models of how museums collaborate with schools
- Work in teams to remix and repurpose objects from the collections of the Smithsonian Museums as form of Innovation Inquiry and STEAM problem solving
- Plan how to work with students to draw from museum resources and design an innovative solution, product or service.
Teachers who have an interest in engineering, history and creative fields as well as the sciences will really benefit from being part of this workshop.
This workshop is based on the student Innovation Thinking workshop that was offered to our QAPS community in March.
